The late 20th century was a phenomenal time for music as aspects such as technology and the usage of computers had started to break barriers. Certain genres which primarily relied on instruments were being influenced by technological innovation. This lead towards the evolution of music and provided the foundations that ultimately shaped up music of the 00’s. Auto-tune which was developed in the 90’s but was rarely used came on the scene with a bang. Even rock banks and hip-hop artists started using auto-tone in certain portions of their songs.
Internet played a huge role in how the music industry was going to be defined in the years to come. Music sharing platforms such as iTunes, Napster and YouTube had taken over the world of music. It gave independent artists more opportunities to put their music forward. Let’s take a look at some of the most influential bands, albums and events that shaped up the music of 00’s:
Billboard Artist of the Decade:
The Billboard Artist of the Decade was named Eminem in 2009. This tells us how influential and popular Hip Hop as a music genre became. The roots of its popularity can be traced back to when influential rappers such as Tupac & Biggie Smalls were killed. Since then the 2000’s music saw an influx of Hip Hop and its popularity holds very much even today. Rappers like Eminem, Nas, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and Kanye West came into prominence.
Pop music also became much more popular in the 2000’s. The main reason behind it is the fact that the usage of auto tone and music that contains drops were introduced in the songs. However, one aspect of the pop music was the fact that pop rock was gaining popularity. Bands like Fall Out Boy & Simple Plan came commercially successful. This further lead towards the reemergence of a forgotten genre, punk rock. Bands like Green Day and Weezer came on the forefront reviving Punk Rock Music.
Heavy Metal/Hard Rock:
Hard Rock and Heavy Metal music saw their last uprising as influential bands such as Guns N’ Roses released their album titled, Chinese Democracy. Metallica also released two albums, whereas 5 albums were released by Bon Jovi.
Pop music especially teen pop continued to gain its unprecedented popularity as child stars such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera rose into prominence. However, in the mid 2000’s the trend of pop music somehow disappeared due to the emergence of modern R&B and hip-hop music. These two genres without a doubt dominated the next five years. Lead artists in Contemporary R&B music included Jennifer Lopez, Usher, Mariah Carey & Janet Jackson.
The evolution of music and how it modified with the help of technology can be easily seen in the music of 00’s. What is more interesting is that a complete change in genres of music and their preference was observed. Popularity of rock music came to an all time low but it still was selling records. The music of 2000’s can be seen as an important evolutionary stage that has helped in shaping up the entire face of music as we know today.
